The way we access primary care is now very different to the way we accessed care before Covid-19, with increased use of video consultations and eConsult to contact GPs and practice nurses.

Following their increasing use, we’re interested in exploring how we can make video consultations and online tools more useful for patients. We’re really keen to hear about your experiences of digital technology in primary care and any suggestions for improvement.

As a patient, have you used video consultations or any of the online services to contact your GP or practice nurse? Are these technologies helpful, or could they be improved in any way?

Great conversations and ideas. I think both video consultations and eConsult are showing lots of potential. I'd be really interested in people's views on which services should be kept face-to-face?

If more health services are to be delivered via the web, including ZOOM etc then with an ageing population we need to think about designing simple clearly focussed I-pads etc. for delivering basic services . Many elderly people are able use technology now but they will become increasingly less able as they get older but the emphasis on health delivery by IT will become the norm.

What does a good video consultation look like for patients? What's the best way of letting people know about video consultations and how to access them?

Hi Rebecca, we will complete a survey of people's experiences of changes to services in a few week's time - 1200 responses so far.
I am sure there will be plenty of comments in there regarding e-consults which we can share with you. Over half the people responding are happy to be contacted again so if there are any interesting ideas/experiences they could be followed up.

Hi Amanda,
if you're happy to share the responses that would be fantastic. Great to hear so many people are happy to be contacted again. Really looking forward to seeing peoples responses.
Best wishes,

I work as a sign language interpreter and have interpreted remote GP calls with patients. This works ok (not great - it's more difficult to 'read' sign language on a 2D screen and internet connections can create difficulties) but only for those patients who are confident IT users. Many of my clients have neither wifi nor email accounts. Deaf people often have poor literacy so e-Consult does not work for them.

Have you had a video consultation with your local GP practice? How did you find the experience? Could this be improved in any way?

I haven’t so I cannot comment but am not sure my surgery offers this kind of service. I would definitely use it if they did. Sorry this doesn’t quite answer your question but was interested in how equitable this service is across the county.

Hi Natalie, thank you for posting it's greatly appreciated.
Equity of services is a really important area. Following Covid-19, many GP practices are now using video consultations. However, making sure patients are aware of this service and how to access it is really important.
We are holding a free event on the 9th of July around this area. If you're interested in taking part please follow this link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-can-video-consultations-and-online-tools-support-primary-care-tickets-105236515250
Thank you once again for posting, it's really appreciated.
Best wishes,
