Taking a break from a caring role - it's essential for your well being

The 2019 Carers Engagement Report for Cornwall shows that taking a break from a caring role is most needed

There are over 5.5 million people who provide care for loved ones throughout the UK, with approximately 66,000 of those carers living in Cornwall.

The current provision of support for carers in Cornwall is a commissioned Carers Service that provides a range of support for unpaid carers; people who provide some form of unpaid care for their relatives, friends or neighbours. The current contract for the service ends in 2021 and a review is underway.

Keen to understand more about people's experiences, during the Autumn of 2019 the Carers Service for Cornwall gathered views of over 350 people using the service from all geographical areas of the county. They published the findings in a report which you can read here: Carers Service Engagement Report  The feedback gathered will be used to inform the future model for the provision of carer support services planned to start in 2021. For more information about the project visit:http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/adultcarers

The report shows many important factors for consideration when caring for carers, but 78% of people felt that one of the 'most needed' forms of help and support is being able to take a break from the caring role, with 58% of those needing a break away from the people they care for.

What is a break for you as a carer?

Is it a coffee with friends, a walk on the beach or in the park, attending a group activity or something completely different. Share your thoughts and ideas with others on Ask Cornwall.
